If you love the Asian cuisine, Joya is your new go to in Amsterdam. Earlier this year the ‘Blue Boy’ in the Spuistraat launched the new name, new look, but also a completely new food concept. The restaurant with modern interior serves Thai and Japanese inspired dishes that are presented in a French way and a specially made for sharing. At Joya they believe that happiness is key when it comes to dining, so here you are in the right place for a happy meals shared with family, friends or colleagues.
One of the owners, Jeabby Chaiyasat was born in Thailand and came to the Netherlands as a child. In Amsterdam she grew up in her mother’s Thai restaurant, which inspired her to now open her own restaurant. She does this in her own way by taking a more modern approach to the menu, presentation and appearance of Joya. Yet you can see typical Asian influences in the hospitality and personal attention that the restorer and her team give to the guests.
WHAT’S ON THE MENU?
I was really curious about the Asian-with-French-twist-fusion and I’m certainly not disappointed! The menu of Joya consists of several small and larger courses that are mainly inspired by Thai and Japanese cuisine, such as a Dimsum, Thai Steak Tartare, Beef Tatami, Tuna Tartare or Crispy Soft-Shell Crab. These classics are elaborated and presented in a French way, so that the typical Asian flavours are experienced in completely different ways. For example, Heaven On Your Tongue can be chosen as a main course, serving Sint Jacobsschelp in combination with Foie Gras. Chaiyasat’s own background has ensured the big Thai influence on the menu, so the Tom Kha Seafood Soup even has its own family recipe. The Japanese influences stem from her preference for the refined way of cooking in that culture. I tried the fish and seafood dishes, which looked and tasted great! As the menu changes every month i have a good reason to come back soon and get surprised with new seasonal culinary creations.
