Santorini was on top of my travel wishlist last summer. I really looked forward to walking among the white-washed buildings with the famous blue domes. Scrolling through the brilliantly curated Santorini photos on my favorite Instagram travel accounts and watching the snaps of pretty villages, charming streets and the breathtaking scenery made my expectations sky-high.
I’m happy to say that the beauty of Santorini wasn’t overhyped. In reality, the place is as gorgeous. During my trip I was constantly blown away by the landscape, architecture, amazing sun sets and the volcanic crater rim on which Santorini is built, caldera. What a fantastic view! If you want to enjoy it to the fullest, make the hike from Fira to Oia. For me the highlight of Santorini.
Fira is worth a visit anyway. It is a huge and crowded city, but you immediately see why. The location is awesome, you will find beautiful colored churches and plenty of nice restaurants. If you have seen Fira, start the walk over the crater rim. It can not be missed, because there is only one path. You walk to Imerovigli, with beautiful views over Santorini.
Hike from Fira to Imerovigli to Oia.
Imerovigli is one of the most beautiful towns that I know. The place is built at the highest point of Santorini island and for this reason it is believed to offer the most spectaculair caldera view. In the moon-shaped crater there are several volcanic islands and the view from the edge is spectacular.
Oia is the most pretty village in Santorini with white, blue and pink houses cascading down the cliffs with lots of boutiques and art shops and beautiful domed Greek churches – all set against the deep blue sea in the Santorini caldera and the azure sky. You have lots of nice restaurants that almost all have a spectacular and restful view . But do not miss the restaurants behind the walking path along the water.
When in Oia, make sure to stay for the sunset to soak up some of the stunning and magical views of the Santorini sundown.
